Ludwig van BeethovenOde to Joy – Alla Marcia from Symphony No. 9, op. 125

Arranged for Brass Quintet by Ivaylo Hristov.

Percussions ad libitum: bass drum, cymbals and triangle.

This famous chorus – nowadays known as The Anthem of Europe – is preceded here by the marching band section. Franz SchubertValses nobles op. 77, D969

Arranged for Brass Quintet by Ivaylo Hristov.

Originally for piano, this collection of 12 waltzes was written for Viennese ballrooms a few months before the composer passed away. It is their lilting and distinctive Viennese rhythm, rubato, balanced phrases, straightforward form, gliding middle voices, melodic suspensions, and unexpected harmonic subtleties that attract the listener.

Giuseppe VerdiVa, pensiero Aria of the choir from Nabucco

Arranged for Brass Quintet by Ivaylo Hristov.

The chorus of the jewish slaves from the opera Nabucco impresses the audience in every single performance. This arrangement lets the brass quintet sound equally mild and homogeneous, both in the soft dynamics and in the grandiose sonority, so characteristic of Giuseppe Verdi.

    Paul DukasFanfare preceding La Péri

Trumpet parts in B are available on demand.

Composed in 1912 to precede the ballet La Péri and originally written for the entire brass section of the symphony orchestra, these brilliant Fanfares are performed independently on stage as arranged for brass quintet. Paul Dukas cleverly manages the sonority of brass instruments and their ability to sound pompous but also lyrical, convincingly delivering both rich harmonies and a complex polyphonic texture.

Béla BartókFour Dialogues Sz. 82, 1926

Arranged for Brass Quintet by Ivaylo Hristov.

    Moderato, Andante, Lento, Allegro vivace

The Dialogues were published in 1927 as Volume I of the collection Nine Little Pieces for Piano, Sz. 82, BB 90. In strict counterpoint, they recall the J. S. Bach’s Inventions, but actually sound quite modern given the melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic variety of Bartok’s themes. Although only seven minutes long, this short suite of polyphonic miniatures captivates the listener with the freshness of the conversations among all musicians in the quintet.
